Recyclable Stand-Up Pouch Boasts Luring Design



In the Middle East, Nestlé is known for its Mackintosh’s Quality Street Confections. The brand’s latest addition to the line of confections were dates in three different flavors: praline hazelnut, caramel hazelnut, and toffee almond. The pouch, made of biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP), metalized BOPP (MET BOPP), and polyethylene (PE), was recognized with a Gold Flexible Packaging Achievement Award in the Printing category from the FPA for its use of rich, vibrant colors and appealing visual effects. Emirates Printing Press, LLC, achieved the package’s look with eight-color gravure printing that makes the pouch distinctive with a matte surface and a high-resolution product image.
The stand-up pouch was designed for the Middle East region with the goal of creating an impact on the shelf, while also making the package recyclable to be more environmentally friendly. The pouch was also designed with a resealable zipper to keep the product fresh longer.
Toppan Printing (Toppan) (TYO: 7911), a global leader in communication, security, packaging, décor materials, and electronics solutions, has developed a stand-up pouch composed solely of paper material. The new pouch is included in Toppan’s “SUSTAINABLE-VALUETM Packaging” lineup, which is part of the recently launched “TOPPAN S-VALUETM Packaging” range targeting added value for society and fulfilling living. The paper-based stand-up pouch has been adopted for products in the SEKKISEI CLEAR WELLNESS skincare range from leading Japanese beauty and personal care company KOSÉ Corporation (KOSÉ).

With attention focused on the problem of plastic waste, there is heightened demand for more eco-friendly solutions, and global businesses are taking various measures to achieve targets for better circulation of plastic resources used for containers and packaging. The KOSÉ Group announced the KOSÉ Sustainability Plan in April 2020, setting out targets to be achieved by 2030 to proactively contribute to society and the environment. One of the themes under the plan is the reduction of environmental impact across all business activities, and KOSÉ is therefore driving initiatives to lower plastic consumption.

KOSÉ is advancing the adoption of containers and packaging considerate of the global environment for SEKKISEI, a flagship brand for its sustainability activities. Toppan, meanwhile, supports the efforts of companies addressing environment-related issues, such as global warming and plastic waste. The new paper-based stand-up pouch selected by KOSÉ represents one output of Toppan’s development of packaging and containers with improved environmental performance. The pouch is being used for SEKKISEI CLEAR WELLNESS W Barrier Mist, which went on sale on January 16, as well as Milk, Gel, Tone Up, and Milk Mild products in the SEKKISEI CLEAR WELLNESS UV Defence range, on sale from February 16.

Conventional paper-based stand-up pouches combine layers of paper, sealant, and plastic film. Toppan’s unique processing technology has now made it possible to ensure stable quality for a pouch consisting only of paper material and heat seal varnish (an adhesive coating agent). The use of a single paper material enables outstanding environmental performance. It not only reduces plastic consumption for the outer package to zero, but means CO2 emissions associated with packaging manufacture can be cut by roughly 28% compared with conventional plastic film stand-up pouches.

“SEKKISEI is one our main skincare brands and with it we have been advancing sustainability efforts for a number of years,” said Takumi Hasegawa, Executive Officer and Product Design Manager at KOSÉ Corporation. “We have adopted Toppan’s paper-based stand-up pouch for five products in the CLEAR WELLNESS series, which incorporates consideration for the envrionment into product design. We look forward to continuing to fuse our ideas with Toppan’s and working towards a sustainable, circular economy.”
