People’s Square, located in the Huangpu District of Shanghai, is a large public square that serves as a central hub for the city. It is situated south of Nanjing Road (West) and north of Huaihai Road (East). Before 949, the area now known as People’s Square was a horse racing course owned by the Shanghai Race Club. However, after the establishment of the People’s Republic of China, the new Communist government took over the grounds. The race course was transformed into People’s Square, which included a large avenue and spectator stands for use during parades.

In the 990s, major changes were made to the square. The Shanghai Municipal Government moved here from the former HSBC Building on the Bund, and the Shanghai Museum was relocated here from its previous site in a former office building. More recent additions include the Shanghai Grand Theatre and the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall.

Today, People’s Square is surrounded by well-known landmarks and tourist attractions. These include the Grand Cinema K, the Municipal government headquarters, Nanjing Road, Park Hotel Shanghai, People’s Park, Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World, Raffles City Shanghai, Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center, Shimao International Plaza, Tomorrow Square, and Madame Tussauds Shanghai.

The Shanghai Metro’s People’s Square Subway Station, an interchange among the subway’s Line , Line , and Line 8, is located here. Several bus stops also ring the north and south sides of the square, making it a transportation hub.
